Sunshine and Schubert on Shelby Street This Sunday

As children are wont to do, they occasionally indulge in the fun of tongue-twisters and alliteration.  So, to indulge your inner child, we have one for you!  Please join us for sunshine and Schubert on Shelby Street this Sunday.  Now say that about five times!

Yes, the weather forecast for Sunday, August 24th at 3:00 p.m. in the vicinity of St. Martin of Tours Church, 639 South Shelby Street, is sunny voices with sprinkles of Schubert, Mozart and Bach during the Louisville Bach Society’s Summer Concert.  Tickets are only $10 per person and may be purchased at the door.  We hope to see you there. It’s one of the last of this summer’s arts events and one you don’t want to miss.

The long term forecast is for a STUPENDOUS Bach Society season, including large-scale choral/orchestral works of a primarily classical nature, with a developing whirlwind of music by German composers from the 17th to 19th centuries.

Of course, all of this is made possible only because you – and 28,000+ other generous donors like you – contributed to last year’s “Best in America” Fund for the Arts campaign.  The nearly $9.2 million raised through your committed giving enabled the Fund for the Arts to increase its annual operating allocation to the Louisville Bach Society by 10%!  These additional funds will go a long way toward the Bach Society mounting a truly triumphant season of top talent.  There’s another tongue-twister!

These essential funds support the Society’s season series of four full scale choral/orchestral concerts; seasonal performances, such a Handel’s Messiah; special invitation and collaborative performances; touring productions; children’s and outreach programs; as well as the Young Artists Competition.

Even more impressive is the fact that the Louisville Bach Society functions largely with volunteer talent.  Remarkably, over 12,000 volunteer hours are donated to this group every year from its “professional in caliber but volunteer in name” 70-voice chorus that contributes their talents for music preparation and performance, as well as assisting with ticket sales, promotion and solicitations.  So know that your donated dollars are stretched and your pennies are pinched by the Fund and its member groups by utilizing first rate volunteers in a variety of ways.  It just gets back to what we’re always saying,

Together through the arts, we create a Great American City!

Tradition and Innovation:

American Masterpieces of Southern Craft and Traditional Art

Fong Choo

Through an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts, the Southern Arts Federation is proud to announce the creation and tour of a new exhibit, 'Tradition and Innovation: American Masterpieces of Southern Craft and Traditional Art.' 'Tradition and Innovation' celebrates the contributions of master craftspeople and traditional artists in the south. Traditional arts and contemporary craft are emblematic of the south. Steeped in tradition and continuity, these art forms have served as an important bridge to the region's cultural history and as a conduit for economic development. Works by 60 artists and craftspeople from throughout the Southern Arts Federation's nine partner states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee) will be accompanied by a rich array of artist interviews, stories, and background information on the master artists and their processes.
